Mission-era roots and a tree ordinance with real teeth. San Gabriel tree work starts with what the city protects, then does the job properly inside those lines.

Vera Tree Service provides residential and commercial tree service in San Gabriel, including tree removal, trimming and pruning, stump grinding, palm care, landscaping, hardscaping, and lawn care. San Gabriel is where the valley's tree story starts. Around the Mission and the Grapevine Arbor, home to an offspring of the 1861 Mother Vine, the Mission District and the older streets off Las Tunas Drive and San Gabriel Boulevard hold some of the oldest planted landscape in the county. North San Gabriel and the neighborhoods toward the foothill edge are leafier and larger-lotted, but the through-line is the same: mature trees, many of them planted generations ago, that this city takes seriously by law, not just by sentiment.
The species list tells that history. The city's own tree preservation materials name oaks, California sycamore, magnolia, jacaranda, Italian stone pine, coast redwood, olive and California pepper among its Class 1 trees, the heritage palette of the Mission era and the early subdivisions, still standing in front and back yards across the city, and now big enough that pruning one is a planned project, not a weekend chore.
Permit note, verified, and read it before you book anyone: San Gabriel's tree ordinance requires a permit before anyone cuts, trims or removes more than one-third of the live foliage of a mature Class 1 tree on private property, and before removing a tree of historical or landmark significance. It also bars reducing the height of a protected mature tree by more than one-quarter over two years without a permit. Palm trees and fruit trees are exempt from the ordinance, and parkway trees are maintained by the city. At your estimate we classify the tree first (Class 1, landmark, exempt) and quote only the work that can be done inside the rules.
Because of those one-third and one-quarter limits, San Gabriel rewards staged work: a heritage oak or magnolia brought back over two planned prunings instead of one illegal hard cut, deadwood and clearance handled now, structure handled in season. That is slower on paper and much better for the tree, and it keeps the owner, and us, on the right side of a strong ordinance. As a family-owned Altadena company, we would rather stage the work than push a cut the tree cannot afford.
Scheduled, ordinance-aware care for Mission District businesses, churches, schools and managed properties, with one point of contact and photo reports after every visit.
Three things, for mature Class 1 trees on private property: cutting or removing more than one-third of the live foliage without a permit, removing a tree of historical or landmark significance without a permit, and reducing a protected mature tree's height by more than one-quarter over two years without a permit. Palm trees and fruit trees are exempt. We classify your tree at the estimate and quote work that fits inside those limits or includes the permit step.
Often, yes. In San Gabriel that is usually the right plan. A large oak, magnolia or sycamore can be cleaned, cleared and structurally pruned in planned stages that stay within the foliage and height limits, with each visit documented. At the estimate we will tell you honestly whether staging works for your tree or whether the job you need is a permitted one from the start.
No. Trees in the parkway between the curb and the property line are public trees maintained by the city, and San Gabriel residents can also request a free city street tree for an empty parkway while funding is available. The trees inside your property line are yours. Those are the ones we quote, classify and care for.
