Stumps below grade
The stump is ground down below the surrounding soil level, enough to cover with soil and sod or to replant nearby, deeper grinding can be discussed where a build or planting plan needs it.
Old stumps ground below grade so the spot can be replanted, re-sodded or built over, chips taken away or left as mulch, your call.
Vera Tree Service provides stump grinding for residential and commercial properties across the San Gabriel Valley. A stump is the part of a removal people live with longest. It blocks replanting, dulls mower blades, trips guests, and can attract termites and sprout suckers for years. Grinding is the proper finish: a grinder chews the stump and main surface roots down below grade, and the spot becomes usable ground again.
Vera Tree Service, a family-owned Altadena outfit, grinds stumps across the San Gabriel Valley, fresh stumps from our own removals, and the old ones that came with the house. One stump or a row of them, in front yards, back yards and commercial sites.
Grinding is quoted after we know the stump's size, species and access, and the price is fixed in writing before we start.
The stump is ground down below the surrounding soil level, enough to cover with soil and sod or to replant nearby, deeper grinding can be discussed where a build or planting plan needs it.
Prominent surface roots around the stump can be ground in the same visit where they are lifting soil, turf or nearby flatwork.
Grinding produces a mound of wood chips. We can take them away, or leave them as mulch for beds, most owners decide at the estimate.
Access decides the equipment. Most SGV back yards are reached through a side gate, so grinder size is matched to gate width, slopes and steps. Foothill lots can add terraces and tight turns; flat valley lots are simpler but often have pools, planters and irrigation right where the stump sits. Tell us about gates and obstacles in the quote form and we will bring the right machine the first time.
Before grinding, underground utilities and irrigation need a thought. Grinding is shallow compared with excavation, but sprinkler lines, low-voltage lighting and drainage near a stump are common in valley yards. We ask what you know is buried nearby, work carefully around marked lines, and recommend a utility locate where a stump sits close to known services, specifics depend on your property, so we confirm on site rather than assume.
Species matters underground, too. Eucalyptus, ficus and some pines can have aggressive surface roots and vigorous sprouting; grinding the stump and main roots is what stops most regrowth, and we will be honest where a species may still push suckers from roots further out.
We size the stump, check species, access and nearby lines, and give a fixed written price, per stump, with multi-stump work priced as one visit.
The area is protected where needed, the stump and main surface roots are ground below grade, and the grindings are raked into the hole or staged to be taken away.
The spot is backfilled with chips or soil as agreed, surrounding turf and beds are raked level, and gates and paths are left clear.
Stump grinding cost is driven by stump diameter, wood hardness and species, how much surface root is in scope, access for the grinder, gate width, slopes, steps, and whether chips are taken away. Grinding several stumps in one visit is usually more efficient than one at a time, which your written quote will reflect.
If the stump came from a Vera removal, grinding is quoted as a clear add-on line so you can decide with full information before the removal day.
Below grade, enough to cover the spot with soil and re-establish turf or planting over it. If you have a specific plan for the spot, such as a new tree or flatwork, tell us at the estimate so depth and root scope can be planned for it.
Usually yes, with a little planning. Fresh chips are best removed or composted down and the hole backfilled with soil, and the new tree is often planted slightly offset from the old stump's centre. We will talk through your replanting plan on site.
Grinding the stump and main roots stops most regrowth. Some species can sprout from roots further from the stump; if that happens, new shoots are small and manageable, and we will tell you honestly if your species is a likely sprouter.
Yes, tell us anything you know about irrigation, drainage, lighting or other lines near the stump. We work around what is marked or known, and where a stump sits close to known services we will discuss a locate before grinding.
Often, yes, planter and slope stumps are common on foothill lots. Access and machine choice change with the site, which is why the quote starts with an on-site look and a photo helps if you have one.
