Palm & Large Tree Care in the San Gabriel Valley

Skinning, frond and seed-pod removal for tall palms, and careful work on the heritage-size trees that define valley streets, climbed, not spiked, where the tree is staying.

Vera Tree Service provides palm tree care for residential and commercial properties across the San Gabriel Valley. Palms and very large trees are specialist work. A tall Mexican fan palm with a dead skirt is a safety concern, a mess over a pool, and a climb that should only be done by someone equipped for it. A heritage oak or Deodar cedar needs the opposite temperament: slow, structural, and conservative.

As a family-owned Altadena company, Vera Tree Service covers both ends of that spectrum across the San Gabriel Valley, palm skinning and cleaning, and pruning and care for large and heritage-size canopy trees, from our Altadena base.

Every job starts with a free on-site estimate and a written price. If a palm or large tree is dead or failing beyond care, we will say so and quote removal honestly instead.

What it involves

Palms, and the really big trees

Palm cleaning & skinning

Dead fronds and skirts removed, seed pods and fruit stalks taken out before they drop, and trunks skinned smooth where a clean trunk is wanted.

Tall fan palms

Mexican and California fan palms at full height, climbed with the right gear, cleaned in sections, with fronds lowered or dropped safely away from pools, roofs and glass.

Heritage & large canopy trees

Structural pruning, deadwood removal and end-weight reduction for mature oaks, cedars, pines and other large trees, planned conservatively to keep the tree's form and health.

San Gabriel Valley considerations

Valley palms and heritage canopy

Fan palms line streets and back yards from Altadena to El Monte, and a skirt left untrimmed is more than an eyesore: dry fronds harbour pests, and rain down spears and seed pods into pools and on cars. In foothill communities, palm cleaning is often planned together with other tree care for exactly that reason.

Large-tree rules need respect, too. Mature native oaks and other designated heritage trees can be protected by city or county rules, and heavy cutting can require approval or simply be bad for the tree. We keep large-tree pruning conservative, explain every major cut at the estimate, and flag any protection that may apply at your address.

A note on technique: climbing spikes wound a living tree, so a palm or canopy tree that is staying gets climbed without spikes. Spikes belong only to removals, if another quote plans to spike your living palm for a cleaning, ask why.

How it works

Our process

Assess height, health & access

We check the palm or tree's condition, height, lean and targets below, and agree the scope, skinning, pruning, before pricing.

Written, fixed price

Per-palm or per-tree pricing in writing, including frond removal, so multi-palm properties know the full number up front.

Climb & cut

Work is done in controlled sections, fronds and wood are lowered or dropped to safe zones, and cut material is taken away.

Cost factors

What affects the price

Palm and large-tree cost is driven by height, how long the palm has gone untrimmed and how heavy the skirt is, trunk skinning if it is in scope, access and what sits below, and the volume of material that comes down. Large canopy work depends on the tree's size, the amount of structural or deadwood work, and rigging needs. Doing several palms in one visit is usually more efficient, and your written quote will show the per-tree picture.

Questions

Before you book

Most fan palms want attention on a regular cycle, fast growers and pool palms usually yearly, slower or out-of-the-way palms less often. At the estimate we will look at skirt build-up and seed pods and give you an honest cycle for your palms, with no obligation attached.

Skinning removes the old frond bases, the rough 'boot' layer, from the trunk, leaving a smooth, clean trunk. It is cosmetic and also removes habitat for pests. It is quoted separately from a standard frond and skirt clean so you can choose.

Not on a palm that is staying. Spikes wound living trunks, so cleaning and pruning are done with climbing methods that do not spike the tree. Spikes are only appropriate when a tree is being removed.

Sometimes end-weight reduction and structural work can reduce risk, and sometimes they cannot. We assess the defect, lean and targets on site and give a straight answer, including when removal is the safer recommendation.

Yes, removing seed pods and fruit stalks before they drop, plus a full skirt and frond clean, is the standard fix. Timing cleans before the heavy pod drop keeps most of the mess out of the water.
