Dead & hazardous trees
Deadwood, decay, cracks, lean and root failure are assessed on site. Hazardous trees over homes and walkways are prioritised in the plan and taken down in controlled sections.
Dead, hazardous or simply outgrown, trees taken down safely in sections, with rigging where yards are tight and a written price before work starts.
Vera Tree Service provides tree removal for residential and commercial properties across the San Gabriel Valley. Tree removal is the last resort, and the most technical job we do. When a tree is dead, structurally unsound, lifting hardscape, crowding a roof, or planted in a spot it has long outgrown, keeping it can cost more, in risk and in repeated trimming, than removing it well, once.
Vera Tree Service, a family-owned company based in Altadena, removes trees across the San Gabriel Valley: single backyard trees, tall pines and eucalyptus, palms, and multi-tree clearances for renovations and rebuilds. Most removals here are not crane jobs. They are sectional removals, a climber takes the tree down piece by piece, lowering each section on ropes so fences, pools, roofs and plantings below are protected.
Every removal starts with a free on-site estimate and a written, fixed price. If a tree can be saved with pruning instead, we will say so, removal is quoted only when removal is the honest recommendation.

The standard foothill job: climber, rigging and a ground crew lowering wood in small pieces where there is no drop zone and no room for error.
Pines, eucalyptus and other oversize trees that need staged dismantling, traffic and neighbour awareness, and a plan sized to the volume of wood that comes down.
Protected trees are the first question in much of the valley. Native oaks and other designated species can be protected by city ordinance or, in unincorporated areas such as Altadena, by Los Angeles County rules, and the details differ by address. At your estimate we identify the species, tell you whether protection may apply, and explain what approval, if any, should be in place before cutting. We do not guess at a rule for your street.
Terrain shapes the job, too. Foothill lots in Altadena, La Cañada Flintridge, Sierra Madre and Glendora can be sloped, terraced or reached only through a side gate, while valley-floor lots in places like El Monte and Rosemead are flatter but often tighter. Santa Ana wind season, dry summers and shallow-rooted species such as eucalyptus and some pines all factor into how a tree is assessed and how it comes down.
After removal, most owners choose stump grinding so the spot can be replanted, sodded or built over, see our stump grinding page for how that part works.
We look at the tree, access, targets below and permit questions on site, then give a fixed written price and spell out what is included.
Drop zones, rigging points and protection for roofs, fences, pools and plantings are planned before the first cut. Neighbours and access are coordinated up front.
The tree comes down in controlled sections, and wood and brush are taken away, or left as firewood or mulch if you prefer.
We do not publish price ranges, because removal cost swings widely with the tree and the site, and a guessed range helps no one budget. The factors that move your written quote are tree height and trunk diameter, species and condition, how much must be rigged down in small sections, access for crew and equipment, what sits underneath the tree, stump grinding if you add it, and the volume of material that comes down.
Your estimate is free and the price is fixed in writing before work starts. If a permit or approval applies at your address, we will flag it at the estimate so there are no surprises mid-job.
Sometimes. Protected species, native oaks in particular, and certain street or parkway trees can require city or county approval, and the rule depends on your city and the tree. We identify the species at your estimate and tell you what applies at your address before any cutting is scheduled.
In most cases, yes. Sectional removal with rigging is designed for fenced yards, pools and narrow gates, the tree comes down in small, lowered pieces. Tell us about access in the quote form and we will plan around what we find on site.
The brush is chipped and the wood is taken away as part of the job. If you would rather keep firewood rounds or mulch, say so at the estimate and we will plan for it.
If you want to replant, lay sod, or build over the spot, yes, grinding takes the stump below grade. It is quoted as its own line so you can decide. See our stump grinding page for details.
Dead, decaying, cracked, badly leaning or root-damaged trees, and trees causing repeated damage that pruning cannot solve, are the usual removal cases. At the estimate we will show you what we are seeing, and if pruning is the better answer, we will recommend that instead.
